USF's Derek Fischer Named NSIC Pitcher of the Week

BURNSVILLE, MINN. (KWSN)-For the first time in his career, Sioux Falls right-hander Derek Fischer has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week after three stellar performances last week against Southwest Minnesota State and Minot State.

The former Brandon Valley standout went 2-0, notched a save and allowed a single earned run in 14.2 total innings for a microscopic 0.61 earned run average. He also posted a 1.02 WHIP and held opponents to a .200 batting average.

"Fischer has been getting stronger all year and he is locating all his pitches," said head coach Matt Guiliano. "Every time he is on the mound he gives us a chance to win, and that's all you can ask for."

In the win over Southwest Minnesota State on Tuesday, Fischer pitched five-hit ball, fanned eight and walked just one batter. He limited the Mustangs to one extra base hit and got stronger as the game went on, permitting a pair of harmless singles over the final five innings.

Fischer kept dealing all weekend long in Yankton, the location of the Cougars’ four-game series against Minot State.

On Saturday night, Fischer was called into service in the bottom of the seventh inning and asked to kill a Minot rally, as the Beavers had runners at the corners and the tying run at the plate with out one on the scoreboard. Fischer took care of things in a hurry; striking out the next batter on three pitches before inducing a ground out back to the mound for his second save of 2013.

Fischer once again lived up to his ace billing on Sunday morning. His latest gem came in game three versus Minot State, as he pitched a six-hitter in USF’s 5-1 win for his second complete game victory of the week. He struck out nine, walked three and didn’t allow a hit until the third inning, which would be Minot State’s only major threat.

Fischer is 3-6 with a 2.77 ERA, which ranks him 8th in the NSIC.

"Derek continues to push himself and wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line," Guiliano added. "And as long as he keeps his pitch count down during his starts, he is a great option to shut down a game as well."

"I am very happy for Fischer as he works to get better every day, but I know he will not be satisfied with this individual honor. He, along with our whole team, have a bigger goal in mind and that is getting to the NSIC tournament.

Sioux Falls (15-19, 10-10 NSIC) posted a 5-1 record last week to move into sixth place in the NSIC standings. The top eight teams will qualify for the NSIC tournament.

The Cougars are scheduled to travel to the University of Mary on Wednesday.
