AUDIO: Huether "This is only just the beginning"

by

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO-AM) -  Authorities have declared a state of emergency for Sioux Falls. Power crews have been working feverishly to restore electricity to tens of thousands in the city due to iced and fallen power lines.

Mayor Mike Huether says things are only going to get worse.  "We've got another 8 to 10 inches of snow coming...more of the freezing ice and wind and its going to impact our tree situation an even bigger way."

Huether is asking residents to remove fallen trees and limbs from city streets, cut only if you can do so safely.  Crews have been working around the clock to remove trees from city streets before the snow begins falling.  Huether believes more power outages are likely with the approaching snow.

The city has plans to help residents remove the tree debris.  Huether says residents should move broken limbs and branches near their curb and sidewalk and eventually the city will pick them up.

"Its the right thing to do," Huether says. "Financially, we're a very strong city. We can afford to do it."
