SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — A kitchen on fire brings Sioux Falls Fire Rescue to a home at 3905 W. 89th Street Wednesday afternoon at 3.
Heavy smoke came from the roof and first floor and upon entry, crews found the kitchen on fire.
After a search of the home for occupants, fire personnel safely brought out one rabbit and reunited the animal with the homeowner’s children.
The fire was extinguished in ten minutes and crews remained on scene for an additional 3 hours ensuring all hot spots had been extinguished.
The fire was contained to the kitchen, however, there was moderate smoke damage throughout the main floor of the home.
There were no injuries reported.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: On Wednesday afternoon June 3rd, 2020 at approximately 3 p.m., Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a reported structure fire at 3905 W 89th St.
First arriving crews found heavy smoke coming from the roof and first floor. Upon entry, fire crews found the kitchen on fire. Crews knocked the main body of the fire down and conducted a quick search of the structure to ensure all occupants were out of the house. Fire personnel safely brought one rabbit out of the structure and reunited the animal back with the homeowners children.
Fire crews had the fire extinguished in 10 minutes. Crews remained on scene for an additional 3 hours to complete overhaul and ventilation operations, ensuring all hot spots had been extinguished and all the smoke was removed from the home. There were no injuries reported at this incident and all occupants safely exited the structure prior to SFFR arrival.
The fire was contained to the kitchen, however, there was moderate smoke damage throughout the main floor of the home.
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with 4 fire trucks, 2 support vehicles, and 18 firefighters. The home did not have a sprinkler system. Fire Inspector Barry Maag has concluded the investigation. A grease fire was the primary cause of fire. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was assisted on scene by Sioux Falls Police Department, PCLS Ambulance, XCEL Energy, MidAmerican, and Red Cross.
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue would like to remind homeowners to educate their family on safe cooking practices. Cover grease fires with a lid to smother the fire. Do not add water to a grease fire and please test the smoke detectors in your home monthly.
