Human sex trafficking is a local problem

by Greg Belfrage

The Department of Justice and Avera are hosting the Violent Crime and Human Trafficking Conference this week at the Washington Pavilion.U.S. Attorneys General Brendan Johnson and Tim Purdon are sponsoring the conference.

If you think human trafficking refers to the foreign slave trade, you're mistaken.

Federal law enforcement officials say local young women, many of them underage, are being forced and coerced into a life of prostitution.

South Dakota U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says many of these young women have drug and alcohol addiction problems and are preyed upon by predators in the community.
