Establishment Republicans in the United States Senate threw conservative colleague Ted Cruz under the bus this week.
Cruz took to the Senate floor for over 21 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday in an effort to try and convince his fellow senators to defund Obamacare. Many Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, refused to support the effort.
Most were worried that Republicans would be seen as responsible for shutting down the government if the effort were to succeed. Others wouldn't get on board because they said the effort had absolutely no chance of succeeding.
This is typical of the GOP establishment's current 'failure' strategy. They are constantly saying, "We can't win no matter what we do. Therefore, we will do nothing."
Establishment Republicans abandoned Cruz. Some added insult to injury by releasing negative opposition research on Cruz to the media. The usual suspects, such as the politically spineless John McCain, publicly trashed Cruz for his effort. Meanwhile, rank and file Republicans all across the country cheered for Cruz.
Cruz's all-nighter has once again illustrated the great divide in the Republican Party, as well as the hateful disdain that the establishment harbors for conservatives within the party.
Establishment Republicans spend more time criticizing conservatives than they do opposing the Democrats. It's getting so bad that you can't even tell the difference between the Republican and Democrat elite, anymore.
(Cruz) "is a medicine man selling goods he knows are phony goods.” - Rep. Peter King (R)
"We’re not going to bow to tea party anarchists who deny the mere fact that Obamacare is the law." - Sen. Harry Reid (D)
The entire Cruz affair shows how deeply disconnected the establishment GOP is from the party base. They don't understand Cruz and they don't understand why he's generating such strong support among grass roots Republicans.
The answer is simple. Conservatives are thirsty for statesmen whose actions are guided by a core set of principles.
There was never any real chance that Obamacare would be defunded. However, instead of rolling over to play dead, Senator Cruz has reignited the debate over Obamacare. He's energized the conservative base and encouraged them to keep fighting against this destructive over-reach by the federal government.
Senator Cruz didn't win the battle this week. However, thanks to principled conservative leaders like Senator Ted Cruz and Senator Mike Lee, the war over Obamacare is far from over.
