A meeting every parent should attend

by Greg Belfrage

It's tough to talk to your kids about drugs and alcohol.

Believe me, I know. My wife and Ihave a 17 year old son and a 14 year old daughter still at home.

It can be very intimidating and challenging to broach these kinds of sensitive topics with your kids. You may be uncomfortable about it. Or maybe you're worried your kids will accuse you of not trusting them.

There's a community town hall meeting tonight that can help you get the conversation started. It's sponsored by Prairie View Prevention Services and is designed to arm you and your teen with plenty of information on the consequences of underage drinking. There's a news release with more information below.

Many of us view underage drinking as a "rite of passage". After all, we drank when we were young and got through it, right?

Consider these sobering statistics:

Since 2006... 62 South Dakota teenagers (13-19 years old) have died and 815 have been injured in alcohol involved vehicle crashes. (SD Dept. Public Safety)

Fifty-two percent of 12th grade females and 61% of 12 grade males report having at least one drink of alcohol on one or more of the past 30 days. (2011 SD Youth Risk Behavior Survey)

Attend the town hall tonight. Arm yourself with information and talk to your teen.

Their life may depend on it.
